Fehu Rune Meaning and Symbolism

Fehu Rune meaning and symbolism

Fehu often appears when you have too many choices or options. You feel divided, splintered in your energies. The Fehu rune tells you that you are in conflict – mostly within yourself. Something is built into your psyche that drives you to always try to test yourself. You push yourself in one direction, then another. Your philosophy could best be expressed as “the grass is always greener,” but, then, sometimes it is.

It is natural to question your needs, desires, and direction. The choosing of this Rune is directing you to clear up whatever confusion exists and to remind you not to let the disarray keep you from going where you know intuitively you should be. The news is that your instinct is usually telling you the right direction to proceed. Don’t drive yourself nuts!

Origin of Fehu Runic Symbol

The Fehu rune ⟨ (Old Norse Old English feoh) represents the ⟨f⟩ and ⟨v⟩ sound in the Younger Futhark and Futhorc alphabets. Its name means ‘(mobile) wealth’, cognate to English fee with the original meaning of ‘sheep’ or ‘cattle’ (Dutch Vee, German Vieh, Latin pecūSanskrit páśu). The Proto-Germanic name *fehu has been reconstructed, with the meaning of “money, cattle, wealth”.[1]

The corresponding letter of the Gothic alphabet is ⟨𐍆⟩ ⟨f⟩, called faihu. Such correspondence between all rune poems and the Gothic letter name, as well, is uncommon, and gives the reconstructed name of the Old Futhark a high degree of certainty.

Fehu Rune Meaning according to Ralph Blum – “Nourishment – Cattle”

Blum believes the Fehu Rune symbolizes “Nourishment – Cattle”. Additionally, he writes that “Fehu is a Rune of fulfilment: ambition satisfied, love fulfilled, rewards received. It promisesnourishment, from the most worldly to the sacred and Divine. Moreover, if the ancient hermetic
principle ‘As above so below’ is true, then we are also here to nourish God”. – Ralph BlumThe New Book of Runes

Fehu according to Rune Secrets – “Fay-Who” – Literally: “Cattle” – Esoteric: Mobile Property, New Beginnings, Wealth

“Fehu is actually the rune of ‘luck’. The universe is not so much made up by chance, as by luck. Luck is a hidden but real energy field inherent in your ‘hamingja’. Fehu governs the capacity to hold this luck and use it like a magical ability. This basic energy, your accumulated luck, is the foundation of the wealth and power in your life. Courageous deeds are central to increasing one’s ‘luck’.” – From the Rune Secrets

Elder Futhark Fehu Rune Meaning – Cattle, Fee, Gold

Futhark believed that FEHU is ‘stored energy’. “The first rune of the first (Freya) aett is Fehu. This rune is often associated with ‘fertility’. It is the rune of potential and fulfilment. It symbolises solid foundations, rewards reaped and ambitions satisfied. Fehu is the promise of nourishment, growth and stability. This rune calls for a deep appreciation for profit, loss and gain in life. Fehu is the rune which requires you to look at your possessions and wealth, then weigh up whether they are for your growth and fulfilment, or are they of an ‘ego’ nature”.
