Eihwaz Meaning and Symbolism

Eiwaz Rune meaning and symbolism

Be aware-we can create our own adverse situations at times. Adverse situations enable us to grow, and change. When we are younger change occurs more easily. As we get older and become comfortable with our life patterns, our own dramas sometimes force us to move on. Personal growth also occurs when we pick Eihwaz. When choosing this Rune, a major change is indicated. The ability to foresee consequences before you act is the mark of a thinking person. Persevere – the change will be for the better.

Eihwaz is the symbol of the yew tree. The tree cannot be destroyed – nor can your SPIRIT.

This is the Rune that tells you to make things happen in your life!

Other Names: Ihwaz, Eiwaz or Eihaz

Eiwaz or Eihaz is the reconstructed Proto-Germanic name of the rune ᛇ, coming from a word for “yew”. Two variants of the word are reconstructed for Proto-Germanic, *īhaz (*ē2haz, from Proto-Indo-European *eikos), continued in Old English as ēoh (also īh), and *īwaz (*ē2waz, from Proto-Indo-European *eiwos), continued in Old English as īw (whence English yew). The latter is possibly an early loan from the Celtic, compare Gaulish ivos, Breton ivin, Welsh ywen, Old Irish ēo. The common spelling of the rune’s name, “Eihwaz”, combines the two variants; strictly based on the Old English evidence, a spelling “Eihaz” would be more proper. – Source Wikipedia

Other popular Eihwaz Rune meanings

The Eihwaz Rune has many meanings to the one casting the runes. As you continue to cast your own runes, you will see that each symbol will carry it’s own special meaning to you. Furthermore, here are some other popular Eihwaz Rune meanings.

Eihwaz Rune Meaning according to Ralph Blum – Avertive Powers – The Yew Tree

If there appears to be an obstacle in your path, consider that even a delay may prove beneficial. Do not be overly eager to press forward, for this is not a situation in which you can make your influence felt. Patience is the counsel Eihwaz offers: nothing hectic, no acting needy, or lusting after a desired outcome. This Rune speaks to the difficulties that arise at the beginning of new life. Often it announces a time of waiting – for a spring to fill up with water, for fruit to ripen on the bough.

Ralph BlumThe New Book of Runes

Eihwaz or Ihwaz according to Rune Secrets – “Yew-was” – Literally: “Yew”

“Eihwaz begins the second half of the 24 rune Futhark and represents the vertical axis, whereas Jera represents the horizontal. It is also indicative of the verticality and energy of the human spine. The spine (the pelvic region not included) has 24 vertebrae, which I do not believe is a coincidence in the case of the elder futhark. The spine is the channel for one of the most powerful energy flows in the human psyche, which Yoga has termed Kundalini ‘fire’. It is the flow of megin energy up from the root hvel (chakra) to the crown hvel in the mind, bringing cosmic consciousness. Attempting to awaken Kundalini fire too early in your training can cause serious harm.” – From the Rune Secrets

Elder Futhark Eihwaz Rune Meaning – a symbol of resilience and transformation

“It’s associated with the yew tree, a symbol of resilience and transformation in many cultures. This gives us a glimpse into the mindset of the ancient Germanic peoples, showing us that they valued resilience and transformation in their lives..”
